In this section of the Website you will find recipes that have evolved in the household of Nina King and Larry Luce in Berkeley since 1977.

We have taken the precaution of copyrighting this collection, as we do not wish someone to steal it and publish it for their own profit. We do hope and expect that viewers will print out individual recipes for the use of yourselves and friends.
As with any such collection of household recipes, this reflects the prejudices of the household. You will find little fruit, for example. (Nina dislikes fruit, and Larry has never felt strongly enough to push the point.)

You will find few desserts. This is mainly due to laziness, plus the fact that excellent desserts are easily bought.
You will also find omissions, notes for further research, etc. If this is a cookbook, it is one in progress. Maybe these notes will become a cookbook eventually, maybe not.

For the curious, Larry cooks, Nina eats and does dishes. Nina is an excellent cook, but she did so much of this while raising her family of three sons, that she is content to do little now. Shopping is shared, with Larry doing the day-to-day, Nina the bi-monthly staples. Both are satisfied with their roles.

In retrospect, our household experience has been a quest for recipes with the following characteristics:

  1. Produces a dish of the highest quality, as found in the finest restaurants today;

  2. Requires little attended cooking time; 10 minutes prep, 40 minutes baking, are an outside limit;

  3. Is made from readily available ingredients;

  4. Can be prepared ahead of time; preferably, it may be refrigerated or frozen;

  5. Is healthy, nutritious, and non-fattening;

  6. Allows a simple version to be made during the week, an expanded version for a party;

  7. Allows for multiple variations on a simple theme (for an example, see Salmon);

  8. Again, produces highest quality.

Not all recipes, of course, can meet the entire ideal requirements. But a surprising number do, and all meet a substantial number.

A few recipes that meet all the above include: Simple Scallops, Broccoli with Garnishes, Dill-Yogurt Dressing, Pollo Chilondron, New Roast Potatoes, Emergency Bouillabaisse.
